Brush and Stock use FAQ

Q. Can I use your art for my project?
A. NO.  Anything you can use is in the Resources or Stock category of the site.  If you really really want to use something not in those galleries ask permission and I'll consider it (but this don't assume or anticipate a yes!)

Q. Can I feature your art or brushes in my journal/website?
A. I'd be honored!  Please make sure you're crediting me however, particuarly off deviantART and shoot me a note about it.  Sounds callous but some people will post things and then get comments about "your art is great!"

Q. Can I put your brushes on my website to share with others?
A.  No, I currently have the brushes on several mainstream sites besides deviantART.  Feel free to provide links to the original content.

Q. I saw your brushes on BioRust or Get Brushes. Are they ripping?
A. No. I have given previous consent to allow them to post my brushes.  Don't hesitate to contact me if you're not sure my brushes should be on a website however.

Q. Do I have to ask permission to use the brushes?
A. No.  They're posted for use as long as terms of use are followed.

Q. What does noncommerical mean?

A. A "noncommercial" project is not just a project in which no profit is made--it is a project in which no money changes hands. Advertisements and other such projects which are indirectly commercial in nature do not count as noncommercial, so you will need to obtain permission before you can use my stock or brushes in such indirectly commercial projects. (credit to resurgere for this great definition)   As of March 7,2006 NO COMMERCIAL USE AT ALL is being allowed

Examples of commercial use are: DA Prints, art prints in general, advertisements for commercial entities, web design for commercial entities, book covers and art in books, cd covers and art in cds, and also in art as part of a portfolio all qualify as commercial projects.

Examples above are not the only commercial projects, if you're not sure just ask.

Commercial use also includes selling items for "credits" on websites, it's another form of monetary gain.

Q. Why don't you allow commercial use?
A. There are several reasons.  One, I use stock resources from the internet and stock from friends.  If they don't allow commercial use, I can't either.  Two, I don't have time to set up a formal system of payment or agreements with each commercial user.  For my own safety I'd want to have this set up before I allowed widespread commercial usage.  Three: I make brushes for fun.  I share them so other people can make great art and/or practice their skills.  I never intended the brushes to make money for any party.  There are plenty of commercial use resources available besides mine.

Q. Can I use your brushes outside of Deviant Art?
A. Yes, as long as you still credit and it is noncommercial (see above).  However, you must check with me first so I can confirm usage adheres to my rules.

Q. Can I use your brushes to make textures, skins, free templates etc?
A.  You must ask if you're creating something to be redistributed out of my brushes.

Q. I got some brushes off of your personal website. Do I still have to credit?
A.  YES! Please refer to the Terms of Use agreement on that site itself.

Q. Can I make a print out of something I used your brushes to make?
A. No, prints fall under commercial usage and are not allowed.

Q. How do I install brushes? Why aren't they in .abr format?
A. They are in .abr! They are just zipped. Try googling winzip.  Tutorials on how to install are located under the brush rules on my front page.

Q. Can I request a brush?
A. Yes. I make no guarantees that I will make it however.

Q.  How do I credit you?
A. check out FAQ #81: How can I create links to other deviants, deviations, or websites?

Q. How do I make/save a brush pack?
A.  Please check out my tutorial here: www.deviantart.com/deviation/9… you've  made a set that is all you need to post in order to have a "pack".

Q. Can you teach me how to use brushes/stock/textures?
A. It's not quite that simple.  My advice is to google a tutorial as it's hard to explain in words sometimes what to do especially with all the different programs out there.  OR do what I did to learn it, play around with the resource to get the effects you've seen in other works.  That way it will stick and you'll develop your own techniques.

Q. You didn't respond to me on Instant Messenger! Why not meanie?
A.  I'm not online to be your personal tutor. I'm often doing research for classes or other work and I don't like to be interrupted.  I will get to you when I have the time if you'll just e-mail me.

The FAQ will be changing as needed; please refer to it if you have a question!

Brush Rules

1. Credit if you use either on dA or off. This includes print sources that are other than personal use.

2. Do not redistribute to other websties, e-mail groups etc. Link my page, that way the rules are kept intact and there is no ripping happening.

3. My artwork is not stock and is not to be used without permisison.

4. No commercial use of brushes. If the project is making money in any way, the brushes cannot be used.

5. You don't have to ask permission to use the brushes. You don't have to note me or comment either (unless usage is off of dA). BUT if you do, NOTE me. I ignore front page stock usage comments as they clutter things up!

i don't know if this counts as commercial or not, so i'll ask. is it ok to use your brushes (the cloud brushes) in a piece i'm entering in a contest? if i won, i wouldn't be getting any actual money, but i would be getting a free subscription and commission.
