You are correct about the concept of Space Age Insect Structures. The Post-ROTJ novels include a series called The Joiner King Trilogy in which a Jedi Knight who was near death was saved by an intelligent species of insects, and encountered by Luke, his son, Ben Skywalker, and several members of the New Jedi Order. Some of them had been absorbed into the "hive-mind" and were rescued by Jedi who also restored the Joiner King to the order after much therapy.
After that trilogy, the entire Galactic Alliance (basically The New Republic) got blown to hell by a Jedi who went to the Dark Side, and ruled as a Sith Lord.
Yeh, this illustration fits very well.
